사무엘상 11장

암몬 사람 나하스가 올라와서 길르앗 야베스를 대하여 진 치매 야베스 모든 사람이 나하스에게 이르되 우리와 언약하자 그리하면 우리가 너를 섬기리라

풀이: 암몬 사람 나하스가 군대를 이끌고 올라와, 요단강 동편의 길르앗 야베스를 마주 보고 진을 쳤다. 야베스 사람들은 나하스에게 말했다. "우리와 항복 협정을 맺자. 그러면 우리가 너를 섬기겠다."

Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh–gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.

암몬 사람 나하스가 그들에게 이르되 내가 너희 오른눈을 다 빼어야 너희와 언약하리라 내가 온 이스라엘을 이같이 모욕하리라

풀이: 그러나 암몬 사람 나하스가 대답했다. "조건이 있다. 너희 모두의 오른쪽 눈을 후벼 파내야 협정을 맺겠다. 그렇게 해서 온 이스라엘에 치욕을 안기겠다."

And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.

야베스 장로들이 이르되 우리에게 이레 유예를 주어 우리로 이스라엘 온 지경에 사자를 보내게 하라 우리를 구원할 자가 없으면 네게 나아가리라 하니라

풀이: 야베스의 장로들이 말했다. "우리에게 7일만 말미를 다오. 그동안 이스라엘 온 땅에 사람을 보내 보겠다. 만일 우리를 구해 줄 자가 아무도 없으면, 그때는 네게 항복하겠다."

And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days’ respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.

이에 사자가 사울의 기브아에 이르러 이 말을 백성에게 고하매 모든 백성이 소리를 높여 울더니

풀이: 사자들이 사울이 사는 기브아에 이르러 이 소식을 백성에게 전했다. 그러자 온 백성이 목 놓아 울었다.

Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.

마침 사울이 밭에서 소를 몰고 오다가 가로되 백성이 무슨 일로 우느냐 그들이 야베스 사람의 말로 고하니라

풀이: 마침 사울이 밭에서 소를 몰고 돌아오던 길이었다. 사울이 물었다. "백성이 무슨 일로 우는가?" 사람들이 야베스 사람들이 보낸 소식을 그에게 들려주었다.

And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.

사울이 이 말을 들을 때에 하나님의 신에게 크게 감동되매 그 노가 크게 일어나서

풀이: 사울이 그 말을 듣는 순간, 신의 영이 그에게 거세게 들이닥쳤다. 그의 분노가 활활 타올랐다.

And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.

한 겨리 소를 취하여 각을 뜨고 사자의 손으로 그것을 이스라엘 모든 지경에 두루 보내어 가로되 누구든지 나와서 사울과 사무엘을 좇지 아니하면 그 소들도 이와 같이 하리라 하였더니 여호와의 두려움이 백성에게 임하매 그들이 한 사람같이 나온지라

풀이: 사울은 소 한 겨리를 끌어다 토막토막 잘랐다. 그러고는 사자들의 손에 들려 이스라엘 온 땅으로 두루 보내며 말했다. "누구든 나와서 사울과 사무엘을 따라나서지 않으면, 그 사람의 소도 이 꼴이 될 것이다." 신에 대한 두려움이 백성을 사로잡았고, 그들은 한 사람처럼 떨쳐 일어섰다.

And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.

사울이 베섹에서 그들을 계수하니 이스라엘 자손이 삼십만이요 유다 사람이 삼만이더라

풀이: 사울이 베섹에서 그들을 헤아려 보니, 이스라엘 사람이 30만 명이요 유다 사람이 3만 명이었다.

And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

무리가 온 사자들에게 이르되 너희는 길르앗 야베스 사람에게 이같이 이르기를 내일 해가 더울 때에 너희가 구원을 얻으리라 하라 사자들이 돌아가서 야베스 사람들에게 고하매 그들이 기뻐하니라

풀이: 사람들이 찾아온 사자들에게 말했다. "길르앗 야베스 사람들에게 이렇게 전하라. '내일 해가 뜨거워질 무렵, 너희가 구원을 얻을 것이다.'" 사자들이 돌아가 야베스 사람들에게 그대로 알리니, 그들은 크게 기뻐했다.

And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabesh–gilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.

야베스 사람들이 이에 가로되 우리가 내일 너희에게 나아가리니 너희 소견에 좋을대로 우리에게 다 행하라 하니라

풀이: 야베스 사람들이 나하스에게 말했다. "내일 우리가 너희에게 나아가겠다. 그때는 너희 좋을 대로 우리에게 무엇이든 하라."

Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.

이튿날에 사울이 백성을 삼대에 나누고 새벽에 적진 중에 들어가서 날이 더울 때까지 암몬 사람을 치매 남은 자가 다 흩어져서 둘도 함께한 자가 없었더라

풀이: 이튿날, 사울은 백성을 세 부대로 나누었다. 새벽녘 어둠을 틈타 적진 한복판으로 쳐들어가, 한낮 더위가 닥칠 때까지 암몬 사람들을 무찔렀다. 살아남은 자들은 뿔뿔이 흩어져, 둘이 함께 남은 경우조차 없었다.

And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.

백성이 사무엘에게 이르되 사울이 어찌 우리를 다스리겠느냐 한 자가 누구니이까 그들을 끌어내소서 우리가 죽이겠나이다

풀이: 백성이 사무엘에게 말했다. "전에 '사울 따위가 어떻게 우리를 다스리겠느냐'고 했던 자가 누구입니까? 그자들을 끌어내십시오. 우리가 죽이겠습니다."

And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.

사울이 가로되 이 날에는 사람을 죽이지 못하리니 여호와께서 오늘날 이스라엘 중에 구원을 베푸셨음이니라

풀이: 그러나 사울이 말했다. "오늘은 한 사람도 죽이지 못한다. 오늘은 신이 이스라엘에 구원을 베푸신 날이기 때문이다."

And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the Lord hath wrought salvation in Israel.

사무엘이 백성에게 이르되 오라 우리가 길갈로 가서 나라를 새롭게 하자

풀이: 사무엘이 백성에게 말했다. "자, 우리 다 같이 길갈로 가서 나라를 새로 세우자."

Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.

모든 백성이 길갈로 가서 거기서 여호와 앞에 사울로 왕을 삼고 거기서 여호와 앞에 화목제를 드리고 사울과 이스라엘 모든 사람이 거기서 크게 기뻐하니라

풀이: 온 백성이 길갈로 갔다. 그곳에서 그들은 신 앞에 사울을 왕으로 세웠다. 그리고 그곳에서 신 앞에 화목제를 드렸다. 사울과 이스라엘 온 백성이 그곳에서 크게 기뻐했다.

And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the Lord in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the Lord; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
