마태복음 2장

헤롯왕 때에 예수께서 유대 베들레헴에서 나시매 동방으로부터 박사들이 예루살렘에 이르러 말하되

풀이: 헤롯 왕이 다스리던 시절, 예수가 유대의 베들레헴에서 태어났다. 그 무렵 동방에서 별을 연구하는 현자들이 예루살렘에 이르러 이렇게 물었다.

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

유대인의 왕으로 나신 이가 어디 계시뇨 우리가 동방에서 그의 별을 보고 그에게 경배하러 왔노라 하니

풀이: "유대인의 왕으로 태어나신 분이 어디 계십니까? 우리는 동방에서 그분의 별이 떠오르는 것을 보고, 그분께 경배하러 왔습니다."

Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

헤롯왕과 온 예루살렘이 듣고 소동한지라

풀이: 이 말을 들은 헤롯 왕은 동요했다. 예루살렘 전체가 그와 함께 술렁였다.

When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

왕이 모든 대제사장과 백성의 서기관들을 모아 그리스도가 어디서 나겠느뇨 물으니

풀이: 왕은 백성의 모든 대제사장과 율법학자들을 불러 모아, 그리스도가 어디서 태어나기로 되어 있는지 캐물었다.

And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.

가로되 유대 베들레헴이오니 이는 선지자로 이렇게 기록된바

풀이: 그들이 대답했다. "유대의 베들레헴입니다. 예언자가 이렇게 기록해 두었기 때문입니다."

And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judea: for thus it is written by the prophet,

또 유대 땅 베들레헴아 너는 유대 고을 중에 가장 작지 아니하도다 네게서 한 다스리는 자가 나와서 내 백성 이스라엘의 목자가 되리라 하였음이니이다

풀이: "너 유대 땅 베들레헴아, 너는 유다의 여러 고을 가운데 결코 작은 곳이 아니다. 너에게서 한 통치자가 나와, 내 백성 이스라엘을 목자처럼 이끌 것이다."

And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

이에 헤롯이 가만히 박사들을 불러 별이 나타난 때를 자세히 묻고

풀이: 그러자 헤롯은 현자들을 은밀히 따로 불러, 그 별이 정확히 언제 나타났는지를 캐물었다.

Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.

베들레헴으로 보내며 이르되 가서 아기에 대하여 자세히 알아 보고 찾거든 내게 고하여 나도 가서 그에게 경배하게 하라

풀이: 그러고는 그들을 베들레헴으로 보내며 말했다. "가서 그 아기를 샅샅이 찾아보고, 찾거든 내게 알려 다오. 나도 가서 그에게 경배하려 한다."

And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.

박사들이 왕의 말을 듣고 갈쌔 동방에서 보던 그 별이 문득 앞서 인도하여 가다가 아기 있는 곳 위에 머물러 섰는지라

풀이: 왕의 말을 들은 현자들이 길을 떠났다. 그러자 동방에서 보았던 그 별이 그들 앞에 서서 길을 인도하더니, 아기가 있는 곳 위에 이르러 멈춰 섰다.

When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.

저희가 별을 보고 가장 크게 기뻐하고 기뻐하더라

풀이: 그 별을 보고 그들은 너무나 기뻐, 기쁨에 넘쳤다.

When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

집에 들어가 아기와 그 모친 마리아의 함께 있는 것을 보고 엎드려 아기께 경배하고 보배합을 열어 황금과 유향과 몰약을 예물로 드리니라

풀이: 집에 들어가 아기가 어머니 마리아와 함께 있는 것을 보고, 그들은 엎드려 아기에게 경배했다. 그리고 보물상자를 열어 황금과 유향과 몰약을 예물로 바쳤다.

And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

꿈에 헤롯에게로 돌아가지 말라 지시하심을 받아 다른 길로 고국에 돌아가니라

풀이: 그들은 헤롯에게 돌아가지 말라는 경고를 꿈에서 받고, 다른 길로 자기 나라로 돌아갔다.

And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

저희가 떠난 후에 주의 사자가 요셉에게 현몽하여 가로되 헤롯이 아기를 찾아 죽이려하니 일어나 아기와 그의 모친을 데리고 애굽으로 피하여 내가 네게 이르기까지 거기 있으라 하시니

풀이: 그들이 떠난 뒤, 주의 천사가 요셉의 꿈에 나타나 말했다. "일어나라. 아기와 그 어머니를 데리고 이집트로 피하여, 내가 다시 일러 줄 때까지 거기 머물러라. 헤롯이 아기를 찾아 죽이려 하기 때문이다."

And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

요셉이 일어나서 밤에 아기와 그의 모친을 데리고 애굽으로 떠나가

풀이: 요셉은 일어나, 그 밤으로 아기와 그 어머니를 데리고 이집트로 떠났다.

When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:

헤롯이 죽기까지 거기 있었으니 이는 주께서 선지자로 말씀하신바 애굽에서 내 아들을 불렀다 함을 이루려 하심이니라

풀이: 그리고 헤롯이 죽을 때까지 거기 머물렀다. 이는 주께서 예언자를 통해 하신 말씀, 곧 "내가 내 아들을 이집트에서 불러냈다"는 말이 이루어지게 하려는 것이었다.

And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.

이에 헤롯이 박사들에게 속은줄을 알고 심히 노하여 사람을 보내어 베들레헴과 그 모든 지경 안에 있는 사내 아이를 박사들에게 자세히 알아본 그 때를 표준하여 두 살부터 그 아래로 다 죽이니

풀이: 헤롯은 현자들에게 속은 것을 알고 몹시 노했다. 그는 사람을 보내어, 현자들에게 캐물어 알아낸 그 시점을 기준으로, 베들레헴과 그 일대에 사는 두 살 이하의 사내아이를 모조리 죽였다.

Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men.

이에 선지자 예레미야로 말씀하신바

풀이: 이로써 예언자 예레미야를 통해 하신 말씀이 이루어졌다.

Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,

라마에서 슬퍼하며 크게 통곡하는 소리가 들리니 라헬이 그 자식을 위하여 애곡하는 것이라 그가 자식이 없으므로 위로 받기를 거절하였도다 함이 이루어졌느니라

풀이: "라마에서 한 소리가 들렸다. 슬피 울며 크게 통곡하는 소리, 라헬이 자식을 잃고 우는 소리다. 자식들이 이제 없으므로, 그는 위로받기를 마다했다."

In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.

헤롯이 죽은 후에 주의 사자가 애굽에서 요셉에게 현몽하여 가로되

풀이: 헤롯이 죽은 뒤, 주의 천사가 이집트에 있는 요셉의 꿈에 나타나 말했다.

But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

일어나 아기와 그 모친을 데리고 이스라엘 땅으로 가라 아기의 목숨을 찾던 자들이 죽었느니라 하시니

풀이: "일어나라. 아기와 그 어머니를 데리고 이스라엘 땅으로 가거라. 아기의 목숨을 노리던 자들이 죽었다."

Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child’s life.

요셉이 일어나 아기와 그 모친을 데리고 이스라엘 땅으로 들어오니라

풀이: 요셉은 일어나 아기와 그 어머니를 데리고 이스라엘 땅으로 들어왔다.

And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.

그러나 아켈라오가 그 부친 헤롯을 이어 유대의 임금 됨을 듣고 거기로 가기를 무서워하더니 꿈에 지시하심을 받아 갈릴리 지방으로 떠나가

풀이: 그러나 아켈라오가 아버지 헤롯의 뒤를 이어 유대를 다스린다는 말을 듣고, 요셉은 그곳으로 가기를 두려워했다. 그러던 중 꿈에서 지시를 받고, 그는 갈릴리 지방으로 방향을 돌렸다.

But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee:

나사렛이란 동네에 와서 사니 이는 선지자로 하신 말씀에 나사렛 사람이라 칭하리라 하심을 이루려 함이러라

풀이: 그리고 나사렛이라는 마을에 와서 자리를 잡았다. 이는 예언자들을 통해 하신 말씀, 곧 "그가 나사렛 사람이라 불릴 것이다"라는 말이 이루어지게 하려는 것이었다.

And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.
