신명기 20장

네가 나가 대적과 싸우려할 때에 말과 병거와 민중이 너보다 많음을 볼찌라도 그들을 두려워 말라 애굽 땅에서 너를 인도하여 내신 네 하나님 여호와께서 너와 함께 하시느니라

풀이: 네가 적과 싸우러 나갔을 때, 말과 전차와 병력이 너보다 많은 것을 보더라도 그들을 두려워하지 마라. 너를 이집트 땅에서 이끌어 낸 너의 신이 너와 함께 있다.

When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the Lord thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

너희가 싸울 곳에 가까이 가거든 제사장은 백성에게 나아가서 고하여

풀이: 전투가 가까워지면, 제사장이 백성 앞으로 나아가 이렇게 말하여라.

And it shall be, when ye are come nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people,

그들에게 이르기를 이스라엘아 들으라 너희가 오늘날 너희의 대적과 싸우려고 나아왔으니 마음에 겁내지 말며 두려워 말며 떨지 말며 그들로 인하여 놀라지 말라

풀이: "이스라엘아, 들으라. 너희가 오늘 적과 싸우러 나아왔다. 마음이 약해지지 말고, 두려워하지 말고, 떨지 말고, 그들 앞에서 겁먹지 마라.

And shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye approach this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your hearts faint, fear not, and do not tremble, neither be ye terrified because of them;

너희 하나님 여호와는 너희와 함께 행하시며 너희를 위하여 너희 대적을 치고 너희를 구원하시는 자니라 할것이며

풀이: 너희의 신이 너희와 함께 나아가, 너희를 위해 적과 싸우고 너희를 구원하실 것이다."

For the Lord your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.

유사들은 백성에게 고하여 이르기를 새집을 건축하고 낙성식을 행치 못한 자가 있느냐 그는 집으로 돌아갈찌니 전사하면 타인이 낙성식을 행할까 하노라

풀이: 관리들도 백성에게 말하여라. "새 집을 짓고 아직 입주식을 치르지 못한 사람이 있느냐? 그는 집으로 돌아가라. 싸우다 죽으면 남이 그 입주식을 치를지도 모른다.

And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.

포도원을 만들고 그 과실을 먹지 못한 자가 있느냐 그는 집으로 돌아갈찌니 전사하면 타인이 그 과실을 먹을까 하노라

풀이: 포도원을 일구고 아직 그 첫 열매를 거두지 못한 사람이 있느냐? 그도 집으로 돌아가라. 싸우다 죽으면 남이 그 열매를 먹을지도 모른다.

And what man is he that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not yet eaten of it? let him also go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man eat of it.

여자와 약혼하고 그를 취하지 못한 자가 있느냐 그는 집으로 돌아갈찌니 전사하면 타인이 그를 취할까 하노라 하고

풀이: 여자와 약혼하고 아직 맞아들이지 못한 사람이 있느냐? 그도 집으로 돌아가라. 싸우다 죽으면 남이 그를 데려갈지도 모른다."

And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.

유사들은 오히려 또 백성에게 고하여 이르기를 두려워서 마음에 겁내는 자가 있느냐 그는 집으로 돌아갈찌니 그 형제들의 마음도 그의 마음과 같이 떨어질까 하노라 하여

풀이: 관리들은 백성에게 한마디 더 하여라. "두려워서 마음이 약해진 사람이 있느냐? 그는 집으로 돌아가라. 그의 형제들 마음마저 그처럼 녹아내릴까 한다."

And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren’s heart faint as well as his heart.

백성에게 이르기를 필한 후에 군대의 장관들을 세워 무리를 거느리게 할찌니라

풀이: 관리들이 백성에게 이 말을 마치면, 군대를 이끌 지휘관들을 세워라.

And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, that they shall make captains of the armies to lead the people.

네가 어떤 성읍으로 나아가서 치려할 때에 그 성에 먼저 평화를 선언하라

풀이: 어떤 성읍을 치러 가까이 다가갈 때에는, 먼저 그 성읍에 평화를 외쳐라.

When thou comest nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it.

그 성읍이 만일 평화하기로 회답하고 너를 향하여 성문을 열거든 그 온 거민으로 네게 공을 바치고 너를 섬기게 할 것이요

풀이: 그 성읍이 평화로 응답하고 너에게 성문을 열거든, 그 안의 모든 사람을 부역에 부치고 너를 섬기게 하여라.

And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee.

만일 너와 평화하기를 싫어하고 너를 대적하여 싸우려하거든 너는 그 성읍을 에워쌀 것이며

풀이: 그러나 평화를 거부하고 너와 맞서 싸우려 하거든, 너는 그 성읍을 에워싸라.

And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it:

네 하나님 여호와께서 그 성읍을 네 손에 붙이시거든 너는 칼날로 그 속의 남자를 다 쳐 죽이고

풀이: 너의 신이 그 성읍을 네 손에 넘겨주시거든, 그 안의 남자를 모두 칼로 쳐라.

And when the Lord thy God hath delivered it into thine hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword:

오직 여자들과 유아들과 육축과 무릇 그 성중에서 네가 탈취한 모든 것은 네 것이니 취하라 네가 대적에게서 탈취한 것은 네 하나님 여호와께서 네게 주신 것인즉 너는 그것을 누릴찌니라

풀이: 다만 여자들과 아이들과 가축과 그 성안의 모든 것, 곧 노획물은 네가 차지하여라. 너의 신이 적에게서 빼앗아 네게 주신 것이니, 너는 그것을 누려라.

But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the Lord thy God hath given thee.

네가 네게서 멀리 떠난 성읍들 곧 이 민족들에게 속하지 아니한 성읍들에게는 이같이 행하려니와

풀이: 네게서 멀리 떨어진 성읍들, 곧 이 가까운 민족들에게 속하지 않은 성읍들에게는 이렇게 하여라.

Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations.

오직 네 하나님 여호와께서 네게 기업으로 주시는 이 민족들의 성읍에서는 호흡 있는 자를 하나도 살리지 말찌니

풀이: 그러나 너의 신이 네게 유산으로 주시는 이 민족들의 성읍에서는, 숨 쉬는 것을 하나도 살려 두지 마라.

But of the cities of these people, which the Lord thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth:

곧 헷 족속과 아모리 족속과 가나안 족속과 브리스 족속과 히위 족속과 여부스 족속을 네가 진멸하되 네 하나님 여호와께서 네게 명하신대로 하라

풀이: 곧 헷 족속, 아모리 족속, 가나안 족속, 브리스 족속, 히위 족속, 여부스 족속을 너의 신이 명한 대로 완전히 진멸하여라.

But thou shalt utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee:

이는 그들이 그 신들에게 행하는 모든 가증한 일로 너희에게 가르쳐 본받게 하여 너희로 너희의 하나님 여호와께 범죄케 할까 함이니라

풀이: 그래야 그들이 자기 신들에게 행하던 그 모든 역겨운 짓을 너희에게 가르쳐, 너희가 너희의 신에게 죄짓게 하지 못한다.

That they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; so should ye sin against the Lord your God.

너희가 어느 성읍을 오래 동안 에워싸고 쳐서 취하려할 때에도 도끼를 둘러 그곳의 나무를 작벌하지 말라 이는 너희의 먹을 것이 될것임이니 찍지 말라 밭의 수목이 사람이냐 너희가 어찌 그것을 에워싸겠느냐

풀이: 어떤 성읍을 오래 에워싸고 쳐서 함락하려 할 때에도, 도끼를 휘둘러 그곳의 나무를 베지 마라. 그 열매는 네가 먹을 것이니 찍지 마라. 들의 나무가 사람이라도 되어, 너의 포위 앞에 맞서기라도 한단 말이냐?

When thou shalt besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by forcing an axe against them: for thou mayest eat of them, and thou shalt not cut them down (for the tree of the field is man’s life) to employ them in the siege:

오직 과목이 아닌 줄로 아는 수목은 작벌하여 너희와 싸우는 그 성읍을 치는 기구를 만들어 그 성읍을 함락시킬 때까지 쓸찌니라

풀이: 다만 열매 맺는 나무가 아닌 줄 아는 나무는 베어, 너와 싸우는 그 성읍을 칠 공성 기구를 만들어라. 그 성읍이 함락될 때까지 써라.

Only the trees which thou knowest that they be not trees for meat, thou shalt destroy and cut them down; and thou shalt build bulwarks against the city that maketh war with thee, until it be subdued.
