신명기 19장

네 하나님 여호와께서 이 열국을 멸절하시고 네 하나님 여호와께서 그 땅을 네게 주시므로 네가 필경 그것을 얻고 그들의 각 성읍과 각 가옥에 거할 때에

풀이: 네 신이 여러 민족을 끊어 내고 그 땅을 네게 주어, 마침내 네가 그것을 차지하고 그들의 성읍과 집에 들어가 살게 될 때 —

When the Lord thy God hath cut off the nations, whose land the Lord thy God giveth thee, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their cities, and in their houses;

네 하나님 여호와께서 네게 기업으로 주신 땅 가운데서 세 성읍을 너를 위하여 구별하고

풀이: 신이 네게 차지하라고 주는 그 땅 한가운데에, 세 성읍을 따로 떼어 구별해 두어라.

Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land, which the Lord thy God giveth thee to possess it.

네 하나님 여호와께서 네게 유업으로 주시는 땅의 전체를 삼구로 분하여 그 도로를 닦고 무릇 살인자를 그 성읍으로 도피케 하라

풀이: 땅을 세 구역으로 나누고 그 성읍으로 이어지는 길을 닦아라. 사람을 죽인 자라면 누구든 그리로 달아날 수 있게 하기 위함이다.

Thou shalt prepare thee a way, and divide the coasts of thy land, which the Lord thy God giveth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every slayer may flee thither.

살인자가 그리로 도피하여 살만한 경위는 이러하니 곧 누구든지 본래 혐원이 없이 부지중에 그 이웃을 죽인 일,

풀이: 그리로 달아나 목숨을 건질 수 있는 경우는 이렇다. 평소 원한이 없던 사람을 본의 아니게 죽인 경우다.

And this is the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live: Whoso killeth his neighbour ignorantly, whom he hated not in time past;

가령 사람이 그 이웃과 함께 벌목하러 삼림에 들어가서 손에 도끼를 들고 벌목하려고 찍을 때에 도끼가 자루에서 빠져 그 이웃을 맞춰 그로 죽게함 같은 것이라 이런 사람은 그 성읍중 하나로 도피하여 생명을 보존할 것이니라

풀이: 이를테면 이웃과 함께 나무를 베러 숲에 들어가, 손에 도끼를 들고 나무를 찍으려는데 도끼날이 자루에서 빠져 그 이웃을 맞혀 죽게 한 경우다. 이런 사람은 그 세 성읍 가운데 하나로 달아나 목숨을 건진다.

As when a man goeth into the wood with his neighbour to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slippeth from the helve, and lighteth upon his neighbour, that he die; he shall flee unto one of those cities, and live:

그 사람이 그에게 본래 혐원이 없으니 죽이기에 합당치 아니하나 두렵건대 보수자의 마음이 뜨거워서 살인자를 따르는데 그 가는 길이 멀면 그를 따라 미쳐서 죽일까 하노라

풀이: 그러지 않으면, 피의 보복자가 분노로 마음이 뜨거워진 채 달아나는 자를 뒤쫓다가, 길이 너무 멀어 따라잡고는 그를 죽일 수 있기 때문이다. 그는 평소 원한이 없었으니 죽어 마땅한 자가 아닌데도 말이다.

Lest the avenger of the blood pursue the slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and slay him; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past.

그러므로 내가 네게 명하기를 세 성읍을 너를 위하여 구별하라 하노라

풀이: 그래서 내가 네게 명한다. 세 성읍을 너를 위하여 따로 구별해 두어라.

Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three cities for thee.

네 하나님 여호와께서 네 열조에게 맹세하신대로 네 지경을 넓혀 네 열조에게 주리라고 말씀하신 땅을 다 네게 주실 때

풀이: 그리고 신이 네 조상에게 맹세한 대로 네 영토를 넓혀, 조상에게 주겠다고 약속한 그 땅을 모두 네게 줄 때,

And if the Lord thy God enlarge thy coast, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, and give thee all the land which he promised to give unto thy fathers;

또 네가 나의 오늘날 네게 명하는 이 모든 명령을 지켜 행하여 네 하나님 여호와를 사랑하고 항상 그 길로 행할 때에는 이 셋 외에 세 성읍을 더하여

풀이: 또 내가 오늘 네게 명하는 이 모든 명령을 네가 지켜 행하여 — 네 신을 사랑하고 늘 그 길로 걸어갈 때에는 — 이 세 성읍 외에 세 성읍을 더 보태어라.

If thou shalt keep all these commandments to do them, which I command thee this day, to love the Lord thy God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, beside these three:

네 하나님 여호와께서 네게 기업으로 주시는 땅에서 무죄한 피를 흘림이 없게 하라 이같이 하면 그 피가 네게로 돌아가지 아니하리라

풀이: 그리하여 신이 기업으로 주는 네 땅에서 죄 없는 피가 흘려지지 않게 하라. 그러면 그 피값이 네게 돌아오지 않을 것이다.

That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, which the Lord thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee.

그러나 만일 사람이 그 이웃을 미워하여 엎드려 그를 기다리다가 일어나 쳐서 그 생명을 상하여 죽게 하고 이 한 성읍으로 도피하거든

풀이: 그러나 만일 누군가 자기 이웃을 미워하여 숨어서 노리다가 덮쳐 쳐서 죽이고는, 이 성읍 가운데 하나로 달아나거든,

But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities:

그 본 성읍 장로들이 사람을 보내어 그를 거기서 잡아다가 보수자의 손에 넘겨 죽이게 할 것이라

풀이: 그가 살던 성읍의 장로들이 사람을 보내 거기서 그를 끌어내어, 피의 보복자의 손에 넘겨 죽게 하라.

Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.

네 눈이 그를 긍휼히 보지 말고 무죄한 피 흘린 죄를 이스라엘에서 제하라 그리하면 네게 복이 있으리라

풀이: 그를 불쌍히 여겨 봐주지 마라. 죄 없는 피를 흘린 죄를 이스라엘에서 씻어 내라. 그래야 네게 복이 있을 것이다.

Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee.

네 하나님 여호와께서 네게 주어 얻게 하시는 땅 곧 네 기업 된 소유의 땅에서 선인의 정한 네 이웃의 경계표를 이동하지 말찌니라

풀이: 신이 네게 차지하라고 주는 땅, 곧 네 기업이 된 그 땅에서, 옛사람이 정해 놓은 네 이웃의 경계표를 옮기지 마라.

Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour’s landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the Lord thy God giveth thee to possess it.

사람이 아무 악이든지 무릇 범한 죄는 한 증인으로만 정할 것이 아니요 두 증인의 입으로나 세 증인의 입으로 그 사건을 확정할 것이며

풀이: 사람이 저지른 그 어떤 잘못이나 죄든, 단 한 사람의 증언만으로 단죄해서는 안 된다. 두 사람 또는 세 사람의 증언이라야 그 사건을 확정할 수 있다.

One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.

만일 위증하는 자가 있어 아무 사람이 악을 행하였다 말함이 있으면

풀이: 만일 누군가에게 죄가 있다고 거짓으로 고발하는 증인이 나서거든,

If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong;

그 논쟁하는 양방이 같이 하나님 앞에 나아가 당시 제사장과 재판장 앞에 설 것이요

풀이: 그 다툼을 벌이는 양쪽은 함께 신 앞에, 곧 그때의 제사장과 재판관 앞에 서야 한다.

Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the Lord, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days;

재판장은 자세히 사실하여 그 증인이 위증인이라 그 형제를 거짓으로 무함한 것이 판명되거든

풀이: 재판관은 철저히 캐물어 조사한다. 그리하여 그 증인이 거짓 증인이라 자기 형제를 거짓으로 모함한 것이 드러나거든,

And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother;

그가 그 형제에게 행하려고 꾀한대로 그에게 행하여 너희 중에서 악을 제하라

풀이: 그가 자기 형제에게 하려고 꾀했던 그대로 그에게 돌려주어라. 이렇게 너희 가운데서 악을 도려내라.

Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.

그리하면 그 남은 자들이 듣고 두려워하여 이 후부터는 이런 악을 너희 중에서 다시 행하지 아니하리라

풀이: 그러면 남은 이들이 듣고 두려워하여, 다시는 그런 악을 너희 가운데서 저지르지 않을 것이다.

And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you.

네 눈이 긍휼히 보지 말라 생명은 생명으로, 눈은 눈으로, 이는 이로, 손은 손으로, 발은 발로니라

풀이: 불쌍히 여겨 봐주지 마라. 생명은 생명으로, 눈은 눈으로, 이는 이로, 손은 손으로, 발은 발로 갚게 하라.

And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
