출애굽기 1장

야곱과 함께 각기 권속을 데리고 애굽에 이른 이스라엘 아들들의 이름은 이러하니

풀이: 야곱과 함께 저마다 식솔을 이끌고 이집트로 들어간 이스라엘 아들들의 이름은 이러하다.

Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob.

르우벤과 시므온과 레위와 유다와

풀이: 르우벤, 시므온, 레위, 유다,

Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,

잇사갈과 스불론과 베냐민과

풀이: 잇사갈, 스불론, 베냐민,

Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,

단과 납달리와 갓과 아셀이요

풀이: 단과 납달리, 갓과 아셀.

Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

이미 애굽에 있는 요셉까지 야곱의 혈속이 모두 칠십인이었더라

풀이: 야곱의 몸에서 나온 사람은 모두 70명이었다. 요셉은 이미 이집트에 가 있었다.

And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already.

요셉과 그의 모든 형제와 그 시대 사람은 다 죽었고

풀이: 이윽고 요셉도, 그의 형제들도, 그 세대 사람들도 다 세상을 떠났다.

And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.

이스라엘 자손은 생육이 중다하고 번식하고 창성하고 심히 강대하여 온 땅에 가득하게 되었더라

풀이: 그러나 이스라엘 자손은 자식을 낳고 또 낳아 들끓듯 불어났다. 수가 불고 세력이 커져, 마침내 그 땅을 가득 메웠다.

And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.

요셉을 알지 못하는 새 왕이 일어나서 애굽을 다스리더니

풀이: 그 무렵 요셉을 알지 못하는 새 왕이 일어나 이집트를 다스리게 되었다.

Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph.

그가 그 신민에게 이르되 이 백성 이스라엘 자손이 우리보다 많고 강하도다

풀이: 왕은 자기 백성에게 말했다. "보라, 이스라엘 백성이 우리보다 많고 강하다."

And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we:

자, 우리가 그들에게 대하여 지혜롭게 하자 두렵건대 그들이 더 많게 되면 전쟁이 일어날 때에 우리 대적과 합하여 우리와 싸우고 이 땅에서 갈까 하노라 하고

풀이: "자, 그들을 영리하게 다루자. 그러지 않으면 그들이 더 불어나, 전쟁이 터질 때 적군에 붙어 우리를 치고 이 땅을 빠져나갈 것이다."

Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.

감독들을 그들 위에 세우고 그들에게 무거운 짐을 지워 괴롭게 하여 그들로 바로를 위하여 국고성 비돔과 라암셋을 건축하게 하니라

풀이: 그래서 이집트는 그들 위에 부역 감독관을 세우고, 무거운 짐을 지워 짓눌렀다. 이스라엘 자손은 파라오를 위해 물자를 쌓아 두는 도시 비돔과 라암셋을 지었다.

Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses.

그러나 학대를 받을수록 더욱 번식하고 창성하니 애굽 사람이 이스라엘 자손을 인하여 근심하여

풀이: 그러나 짓누를수록 그들은 더 불어나고 더 퍼져 나갔다. 이집트 사람들은 이스라엘 자손을 보며 섬뜩해졌다.

But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel.

이스라엘 자손의 역사를 엄하게 하여

풀이: 이집트 사람들은 이스라엘 자손을 가혹하게 부려 먹었다.

And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour:

고역으로 그들의 생활을 괴롭게 하니 곧 흙 이기기와 벽돌 굽기와 농사의 여러가지 일이라 그 시키는 역사가 다 엄하였더라

풀이: 흙을 이기고 벽돌을 굽는 일에, 들에서 하는 온갖 일에, 그들의 삶을 고된 노역으로 짓이겼다. 시키는 일마다 하나같이 모질었다.

And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour.

애굽 왕이 히브리 산파 십브라라 하는 자와 부아라 하는 자에게 일러

풀이: 이집트 왕이 히브리 산파들에게 일렀다. 한 사람의 이름은 십브라, 다른 사람의 이름은 부아였다.

And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah:

가로되 너희는 히브리 여인을 위하여 조산할 때에 살펴서 남자여든 죽이고 여자여든 그는 살게 두라

풀이: 왕이 말했다. "히브리 여인이 해산하는 것을 받을 때, 산판을 잘 살펴라. 사내아이거든 죽이고, 계집아이거든 살려 두어라."

And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.

그러나 산파들이 하나님을 두려워하여 애굽 왕의 명을 어기고 남자를 살린지라

풀이: 그러나 산파들은 신을 두려워하여, 이집트 왕이 명한 대로 하지 않고 사내아이들을 살렸다.

But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.

애굽 왕이 산파를 불러서 그들에게 이르되 너희가 어찌 이같이 하여 남자를 살렸느냐

풀이: 이집트 왕이 산파들을 불러들여 따져 물었다. "어찌하여 이런 짓을 했느냐? 어찌 사내아이들을 살렸느냐?"

And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?

산파가 바로에게 대답하되 히브리 여인은 애굽 여인과 같지 아니하고 건장하여 산파가 그들에게 이르기 전에 해산하였더이다 하매

풀이: 산파들이 파라오에게 대답했다. "히브리 여인은 이집트 여인과 다릅니다. 워낙 기운차서, 산파가 이르기도 전에 벌써 아이를 낳아 버립니다."

And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them.

하나님이 그 산파들에게 은혜를 베푸시니라 백성은 생육이 번성하고 심히 강대하며

풀이: 신은 산파들을 잘 대해 주었다. 백성은 더 불어나 무척 강해졌다.

Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.

산파는 하나님을 경외하였으므로 하나님이 그들의 집을 왕성케 하신지라

풀이: 산파들이 신을 두려워했으므로, 신은 그들에게도 번성한 집안을 일구어 주었다.

And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.

그러므로 바로가 그 모든 신민에게 명하여 가로되 남자가 나거든 너희는 그를 하수에 던지고 여자여든 살리라 하였더라

풀이: 그러자 파라오가 자기 온 백성에게 명령했다. "사내아이가 나거든 모조리 나일강에 던져라. 계집아이거든 살려 두어라."

And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.
