에스더 8장

당일에 아하수에로왕이 유다인의 대적 하만의 집을 왕후 에스더에게 주니라 에스더가 모르드개는 자기에게 어떻게 관계됨을 왕께 고한고로 모르드개가 왕의 앞에 나아오니

풀이: 바로 그날, 아하수에로 왕은 유다인의 원수 하만의 집을 왕후 에스더에게 넘겨주었다. 그리고 에스더가 모르드개와 자신이 어떤 사이인지를 왕에게 밝히자, 모르드개는 왕 앞에 나아왔다.

On that day did the king Ahasuerus give the house of Haman the Jews’ enemy unto Esther the queen. And Mordecai came before the king; for Esther had told what he was unto her.

왕이 하만에게 거둔 반지를 빼어 모르드개에게 준지라 에스더가 모르드개로 하만의 집을 주관하게 하니라

풀이: 왕은 하만에게서 거두어들였던 자신의 인장 반지를 빼어 모르드개에게 주었다. 그리고 에스더는 모르드개에게 하만의 집안을 맡아 다스리게 했다.

And the king took off his ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it unto Mordecai. And Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman.

에스더가 다시 왕의 앞에서 말씀하며 왕의 발아래 엎드려 아각 사람 하만이 유다인을 해하려 한 악한 꾀를 제하기를 울며 구하니

풀이: 에스더는 다시 한 번 왕 앞에서 입을 열었다. 그의 발 앞에 엎드려 눈물을 흘리며, 아각 사람 하만이 유다인을 해치려 꾸민 그 악한 음모를 거두어 달라고 간청했다.

And Esther spake yet again before the king, and fell down at his feet, and besought him with tears to put away the mischief of Haman the Agagite, and his device that he had devised against the Jews.

왕이 에스더를 향하여 금홀을 내어미는지라 에스더가 일어나 왕의 앞에 서서

풀이: 왕이 에스더를 향해 금홀을 내밀자, 에스더는 일어나 왕 앞에 섰다.

Then the king held out the golden sceptre toward Esther. So Esther arose, and stood before the king,

가로되 왕이 만일 즐겨하시며 내가 왕의 목전에 은혜를 입었고 또 왕이 이 일을 선히 여기시며 나를 기쁘게 보실찐대 조서를 내리사 아각 사람 함므다다의 아들 하만이 왕의 각 도에 있는 유다인을 멸하려고 꾀하고 쓴 조서를 취소하소서

풀이: 그리고 말했다. "임금님께서 좋게 여기시고, 제가 임금님 눈에 은혜를 입었으며, 이 일을 옳게 보시고 저를 어여삐 보신다면 — 부디 조서를 새로 내리시어, 아각 사람 함므다다의 아들 하만이 왕의 모든 지방에 있는 유다인을 없애려고 꾸며 써 보낸 그 편지를 무효로 돌려 주십시오.

And said, If it please the king, and if I have found favour in his sight, and the thing seem right before the king, and I be pleasing in his eyes, let it be written to reverse the letters devised by Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to destroy the Jews which are in all the king’s provinces:

내가 어찌 내 민족의 화 당함을 참아 보며 내 친척의 멸망함을 참아 보리이까

풀이: 제가 어찌 제 겨레에게 닥칠 재앙을 눈 뜨고 보겠으며, 제 핏줄이 멸망하는 것을 어찌 차마 지켜보겠습니까?"

For how can I endure to see the evil that shall come unto my people? or how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred?

아하수에로왕이 왕후 에스더와 유다인 모르드개에게 이르되 하만이 유다인을 살해하려 하므로 나무에 달렸고 내가 그 집으로 에스더에게 주었으니

풀이: 그러자 아하수에로 왕이 왕후 에스더와 유다인 모르드개에게 말했다. "보라, 하만이 유다인에게 손을 댔기에 나는 그를 나무에 매달았고, 그의 집은 에스더에게 주었다.

Then the king Ahasuerus said unto Esther the queen and to Mordecai the Jew, Behold, I have given Esther the house of Haman, and him they have hanged upon the gallows, because he laid his hand upon the Jews.

너희는 왕의 명의로 유다인에게 조서를 뜻대로 쓰고 왕의 반지로 인을 칠찌어다 왕의 이름을 쓰고 왕의 반지로 인친 조서는 누구든지 취소할 수 없음이니라

풀이: 그러니 너희도 유다인을 위하여, 너희 뜻대로 왕의 이름으로 조서를 쓰고 왕의 반지로 인장을 찍어라. 왕의 이름으로 쓰고 왕의 반지로 봉인한 글은 그 누구도 되돌릴 수 없기 때문이다."

Write ye also for the Jews, as it liketh you, in the king’s name, and seal it with the king’s ring: for the writing which is written in the king’s name, and sealed with the king’s ring, may no man reverse.

그 때 시완월 곧 삼월 이십 삼일에 왕의 서기관이 소집되고 무릇 모르드개의 시키는대로 조서를 써서 인도로부터 구스까지의 일백 이십 칠도 유다인과 대신과 방백과 관원에게 전할쌔 각 도의 문자와 각 민족의 방언과 유다인의 문자와 방언대로 쓰되

풀이: 그리하여 그때, 곧 시완월(3월) 23일에 왕의 서기관들이 소집되었다. 모르드개가 지시한 그대로 조서가 작성되어, 인도에서 구스에 이르는 백스물일곱 개 지방의 유다인과 총독과 지방관과 관리들에게 전해졌다. 각 지방의 글자와 각 민족의 언어에 맞추어, 그리고 유다인에게는 그들의 글자와 그들의 언어로 적었다.

Then were the king’s scribes called at that time in the third month, that is, the month Sivan, on the three and twentieth day thereof; and it was written according to all that Mordecai commanded unto the Jews, and to the lieutenants, and the deputies and rulers of the provinces which are from India unto Ethiopia, an hundred twenty and seven provinces, unto every province according to the writing thereof, and unto every people after their language, and to the Jews according to their writing, and according to their language.

아하수에로왕의 명의로 쓰고 왕의 반지로 인을 치고 그 조서를 역졸들에게 부쳐 전하게 하니 저희는 왕궁에서 길러서 왕의 일에 쓰는 준마를 타는 자들이라

풀이: 글은 아하수에로 왕의 이름으로 쓰였고 왕의 반지로 봉인되었다. 그 조서는 역참을 달리는 파발꾼들에게 맡겨졌는데, 그들은 왕실에서 길러 나랏일에 쓰는 빠른 역마와 노새와 낙타와 어린 단봉낙타를 타는 자들이었다.

And he wrote in the king Ahasuerus’ name, and sealed it with the king’s ring, and sent letters by posts on horseback, and riders on mules, camels, and young dromedaries:

조서에는 왕이 여러 고을에 있는 유다인에게 허락하여 저희로 함께 모여 스스로 생명을 보호하여 각 도의 백성 중 세력을 가지고 저희를 치려하는 자와 그 처자를 죽이고 도륙하고 진멸하고 그 재산을 탈취하게 하되

풀이: 조서의 내용은 이러했다. 왕은 각 성읍에 있는 유다인에게, 한데 모여 자기 목숨을 지키려 맞서 일어설 권리를 주었다. 어느 지방, 어느 민족의 무리든 무력을 동원해 그들을 치려 한다면, 그 무리는 물론 그 처자식까지 쳐 죽이고 진멸하며 그 재산을 빼앗을 수 있게 했다.

Wherein the king granted the Jews which were in every city to gather themselves together, and to stand for their life, to destroy, to slay, and to cause to perish, all the power of the people and province that would assault them, both little ones and women, and to take the spoil of them for a prey,

아하수에로왕의 각 도에서 아달월 곧 십이월 십 삼일 하루 동안에 하게 하였고

풀이: 이 일은 아하수에로 왕의 모든 지방에서 같은 날 — 곧 아달월(12월) 13일 단 하루 동안 — 행하도록 정해졌다.

Upon one day in all the provinces of king Ahasuerus, namely, upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar.

이 조서 초본을 각 도에 전하고 각 민족에게 반포하고 유다인으로 예비하였다가 그 날에 대적에게 원수를 갚게 한지라

풀이: 이 조서의 사본은 각 지방에 전달되고 모든 민족에게 공포되어, 유다인이 그날을 대비해 준비하고 있다가 자기 원수들에게 되갚을 수 있게 했다.

The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given in every province was published unto all people, and that the Jews should be ready against that day to avenge themselves on their enemies.

왕의 명이 심히 급하매 역졸이 왕의 일에 쓰는 준마를 타고 빨리 나가고 그 조서가 도성 수산에도 반포되니라

풀이: 왕의 명령이 워낙 다급했으므로, 파발꾼들은 나랏일에 쓰는 빠른 역마를 타고 서둘러 달려 나갔다. 그리고 그 조서는 수산 성채에도 공포되었다.

So the posts that rode upon mules and camels went out, being hastened and pressed on by the king’s commandment. And the decree was given at Shushan the palace.

모르드개가 푸르고 흰 조복을 입고 큰 금면류관을 쓰고 자색 가는 베 겉옷을 입고 왕의 앞에서 나오니 수산성이 즐거이 부르며 기뻐하고

풀이: 모르드개는 푸른빛과 흰빛의 왕실 예복을 입고, 큼직한 금관을 쓰고, 고운 베와 자줏빛으로 지은 겉옷을 걸친 채 왕 앞에서 걸어 나왔다. 그러자 수산 성은 환호하며 기뻐했다.

And Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal apparel of blue and white, and with a great crown of gold, and with a garment of fine linen and purple: and the city of Shushan rejoiced and was glad.

유다인에게는 영광과 즐거움과 기쁨과 존귀함이 있는지라

풀이: 유다인에게는 빛이 비쳤고, 즐거움과 기쁨과 영예가 찾아왔다.

The Jews had light, and gladness, and joy, and honour.

왕의 조명이 이르는 각 도, 각 읍에서 유다인이 즐기고 기뻐하여 잔치를 베풀고 그 날로 경절을 삼으니 본토 백성이 유다인을 두려워하여 유다인 되는 자가 많더라

풀이: 왕의 명령과 조서가 닿는 지방마다, 성읍마다 유다인은 기뻐하고 즐거워하며 잔치를 벌이고 그날을 경축일로 삼았다. 그 땅의 백성 가운데 유다인이 되는 자가 많아졌으니, 유다인을 향한 두려움이 그들을 덮쳤기 때문이다.

And in every province, and in every city, whithersoever the king’s commandment and his decree came, the Jews had joy and gladness, a feast and a good day. And many of the people of the land became Jews; for the fear of the Jews fell upon them.
