이 일은 아하수에로왕 때에 된 것이니 아하수에로는 인도로 구스까지 일백 이십 칠도를 치리하는 왕이라

풀이: 아하수에로 왕 때 일어난 일이다. 이 아하수에로는 인도에서 구스에 이르기까지 백스물일곱 개 지방을 다스리던 왕이었다.

Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus, (this is Ahasuerus which reigned, from India even unto Ethiopia, over an hundred and seven and twenty provinces:)

당시에 아하수에로왕이 수산 궁에서 즉위하고

풀이: 그 무렵 아하수에로 왕은 수산 성채에 자리한 왕좌에 앉아 나라를 다스리고 있었다.

That in those days, when the king Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom, which was in Shushan the palace,

위에 있은지 삼년에 그 모든 방백과 신복을 위하여 잔치를 베푸니 바사와 메대의 장수와 각 도의 귀족과 방백들이 다 왕 앞에 있는지라

풀이: 왕위에 오른 지 3년째 되던 해, 그는 모든 대신과 신하를 위해 잔치를 열었다. 페르시아와 메대의 군 지휘관들, 각 지방의 귀족과 관리들이 모두 왕 앞에 모였다.

In the third year of his reign, he made a feast unto all his princes and his servants; the power of Persia and Media, the nobles and princes of the provinces, being before him:

왕이 여러 날 곧 일백 팔십일 동안에 그 영화로운 나라의 부함과 위엄의 혁혁함을 나타내니라

풀이: 왕은 자기 나라가 얼마나 부유하고 영화로운지, 자신의 위엄이 얼마나 대단한지를 무려 180일에 걸쳐 과시했다.

When he shewed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the honour of his excellent majesty many days, even an hundred and fourscore days.

이 날이 다하매 왕이 또 도성 수산 대소 인민을 위하여 왕궁 후원 뜰에서 칠일 동안 잔치를 베풀쌔

풀이: 그 기간이 끝나자 왕은 이번엔 수산 성채에 머무는 백성 전부를, 높은 자든 낮은 자든 가리지 않고 불러 왕궁 뜰 정원에서 7일 동안 잔치를 베풀었다.

And when these days were expired, the king made a feast unto all the people that were present in Shushan the palace, both unto great and small, seven days, in the court of the garden of the king’s palace;

백색, 녹색, 청색 휘장을 자색 가는 베줄로 대리석 기둥 은고리에 매고 금과 은으로 만든 걸상을 화반석, 백석, 운모석, 흑석을 깐 땅에 진설하고

풀이: 하얀 무명천과 푸른 천으로 만든 휘장을, 고운 베와 자줏빛 끈으로 대리석 기둥의 은고리에 매달았다. 금과 은으로 만든 긴 의자가 놓였고, 바닥에는 붉은빛·흰빛·노란빛·검은빛 돌을 깐 화려한 포장이 펼쳐졌다.

Where were white, green, and blue, hangings, fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and pillars of marble: the beds were of gold and silver, upon a pavement of red, and blue, and white, and black, marble.

금잔으로 마시게 하니 잔의 식양이 각기 다르고 왕의 풍부한대로 어주가 한이 없으며

풀이: 술은 금잔에 따라 마시게 했는데, 잔 하나하나가 저마다 모양이 달랐다. 왕실의 포도주가 왕의 넉넉함에 걸맞게 끝도 없이 흘렀다.

And they gave them drink in vessels of gold, (the vessels being diverse one from another,) and royal wine in abundance, according to the state of the king.

마시는 것도 규모가 있어 사람으로 억지로 하지 않게 하니 이는 왕이 모든 궁내 관리에게 명하여 각 사람으로 마음대로 하게 함이더라

풀이: 다만 마시는 데에는 정해진 규칙이 있어, 아무에게도 억지로 권하지 않았다. 왕이 궁의 모든 시종에게 일러, 누구든 제 마음대로 마시게 하라 했기 때문이다.

And the drinking was according to the law; none did compel: for so the king had appointed to all the officers of his house, that they should do according to every man’s pleasure.

왕후 와스디도 아하수에로 왕궁에서 부녀들을 위하여 잔치를 베푸니라

풀이: 한편 왕후 와스디도 아하수에로의 왕궁에서 여인들을 위해 따로 잔치를 열었다.

Also Vashti the queen made a feast for the women in the royal house which belonged to king Ahasuerus.

제 칠일에 왕이 주흥이 일어나서 어전 내시 므후만과 비스다와 하르보나와 빅다와 아박다와 세달과 가르가스 일곱 사람을 명하여

풀이: 잔치 7일째 되던 날, 술에 기분이 한껏 오른 왕은 자기 곁에서 시중들던 일곱 내시 — 므후만, 비스다, 하르보나, 빅다, 아박다, 세달, 가르가스 — 에게 명령했다.

On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the seven chamberlains that served in the presence of Ahasuerus the king,

왕후 와스디를 청하여 왕후의 면류관을 정제하고 왕의 앞으로 나아오게 하여 그 아리따움을 뭇 백성과 방백들에게 보이게 하라 하니 이는 왕후의 용모가 보기에 좋음이라

풀이: 왕후 와스디에게 왕관을 씌워 왕 앞으로 데려오라는 것이었다. 백성과 신하들 앞에서 그녀의 아름다움을 내보이려는 속셈이었다. 와스디는 보기 드문 미인이었다.

To bring Vashti the queen before the king with the crown royal, to shew the people and the princes her beauty: for she was fair to look on.

그러나 왕후 와스디가 내시의 전하는 왕명을 좇아 오기를 싫어하니 왕이 진노하여 중심이 불 붙는듯하더라

풀이: 그런데 왕후 와스디는 내시들이 전한 왕의 명령에 따라 나오기를 거부했다. 왕은 크게 분노했고, 속에서 노여움이 불처럼 타올랐다.

But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him.

왕이 사례를 아는 박사들에게 묻되 (왕이 규례와 법률을 아는 자에게 묻는 전례가 있는데

풀이: 왕은 때를 읽을 줄 아는 현인들에게 의견을 물었다. 무릇 법과 판례에 밝은 자들에게 묻는 것이 이 왕의 방식이었다.

Then the king said to the wise men, which knew the times, (for so was the king’s manner toward all that knew law and judgment:

때에 왕에게 가까이 하여 왕의 기색을 살피며 나라 첫자리에 앉은 자는 바사와 메대의 일곱 방백 곧 가르스나와 세달과 아드마다와 다시스와 메레스와 마르스나와 므무간이라)

풀이: 그때 왕을 가장 가까이서 모시며 왕의 안색을 살피던, 나라에서 으뜸가는 자리에 앉은 이들은 페르시아와 메대의 일곱 대신, 곧 가르스나, 세달, 아드마다, 다시스, 메레스, 마르스나, 므무간이었다.

And the next unto him was Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, which saw the king’s face, and which sat the first in the kingdom;)

왕후 와스디가 내시의 전하는 아하수에로 왕명을 좇지 아니하니 규례대로 하면 어떻게 처치할꼬

풀이: 왕이 물었다. "왕후 와스디가 내시들이 전한 내 명령을 따르지 않았으니, 법대로 하자면 그녀를 어떻게 처리해야 하겠소?"

What shall we do unto the queen Vashti according to law, because she hath not performed the commandment of the king Ahasuerus by the chamberlains?

므무간이 왕과 방백 앞에서 대답하여 가로되 왕후 와스디가 왕에게만 잘못 할뿐 아니라 아하수에로왕의 각 도 방백과 뭇 백성에게도 잘못하였나이다

풀이: 므무간이 왕과 대신들 앞에서 대답했다. "왕후 와스디는 임금님 한 분께만 잘못한 것이 아닙니다. 아하수에로 왕의 모든 지방 관리와 온 백성에게 잘못을 저지른 것입니다.

And Memucan answered before the king and the princes, Vashti the queen hath not done wrong to the king only, but also to all the princes, and to all the people that are in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus.

아하수에로왕이 명하여 왕후 와스디를 청하여도 오지 아니하였다 하는 왕후의 행위의 소문이 모든 부녀에게 전파되면 저희도 그 남편을 멸시할 것인즉

풀이: 왕후가 한 일이 모든 여인에게 알려질 것입니다. '아하수에로 왕이 왕후 와스디를 불렀는데도 오지 않았다'는 소문이 퍼지면, 여인들이 저마다 제 남편을 우습게 볼 것입니다.

For this deed of the queen shall come abroad unto all women, so that they shall despise their husbands in their eyes, when it shall be reported, The king Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she came not.

오늘이라도 바사와 메대의 귀부인들이 왕후의 행위를 듣고 왕의 모든 방백에게 그렇게 말하리니 멸시와 분노가 많이 일어나리이다

풀이: 당장 오늘이라도 왕후의 행동을 전해 들은 페르시아와 메대의 귀부인들이 왕의 모든 대신에게 똑같이 말할 테고, 그러면 멸시와 분노가 끝도 없이 쏟아질 것입니다.

Likewise shall the ladies of Persia and Media say this day unto all the king’s princes, which have heard of the deed of the queen. Thus shall there arise too much contempt and wrath.

왕이 만일 선히 여기실찐대 와스디로 다시는 왕 앞에 오지 못하게 하는 조서를 내리되 바사와 메대의 법률 중에 기록하여 변역함이 없게 하고 그 왕후의 위를 저보다 나은 사람에게 주소서

풀이: 임금님께서 좋게 여기신다면, 와스디는 다시는 왕 앞에 나오지 못한다는 칙령을 내리시고, 그것을 결코 뒤집을 수 없도록 페르시아와 메대의 법전에 새겨 두십시오. 그리고 왕후의 자리는 그녀보다 나은 다른 여인에게 주십시오.

If it please the king, let there go a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than she.

왕의 조서가 이 광대한 전국에 반포되면 귀천을 무론하고 모든 부녀가 그 남편을 존경하리이다

풀이: 이 광대한 나라 방방곡곡에 임금님의 칙령이 반포되면, 귀하든 천하든 모든 아내가 제 남편을 떠받들 것입니다."

And when the king’s decree which he shall make shall be published throughout all his empire, (for it is great,) all the wives shall give to their husbands honour, both to great and small.

왕과 방백들이 그 말을 선히 여긴지라 왕이 므무간의 말대로 행하여

풀이: 왕과 대신들은 이 말을 흡족하게 여겼고, 왕은 므무간이 말한 대로 따랐다.

And the saying pleased the king and the princes; and the king did according to the word of Memucan:

각 도 각 백성의 문자와 방언대로 모든 도에 조서를 내려 이르기를 남편으로 그 집을 주관하게 하고 자기 민족의 방언대로 말하게 하라 하였더라

풀이: 왕은 각 지방의 글자와 각 민족의 언어에 맞추어 온 나라에 칙령을 적은 편지를 보냈다. 남자가 제 집에서 주인 노릇을 하고, 집안에서는 그 가장의 모국어로 말하게 하라는 내용이었다.

For he sent letters into all the king’s provinces, into every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language, that every man should bear rule in his own house, and that it should be published according to the language of every people.
