여호수아 8장

여호와께서 여호수아에게 이르시되 두려워 말라 놀라지 말라 군사를 다 거느리고 일어나 아이로 올라가라 보라 내가 아이 왕과 그 백성과 그 성읍과 그 땅을 다 네 손에 주었노니

풀이: 신이 여호수아에게 말했다. "겁먹지 마라, 주눅 들지 마라. 싸울 수 있는 군사를 전부 거느리고 일어나 아이성으로 올라가라. 보라, 내가 아이의 왕과 그 백성, 그 성읍과 그 땅을 모두 네 손에 넘겨주었다."

And the Lord said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land:

너는 여리고와 그 왕에게 행한것 같이 아이와 그 왕에게 행하되 오직 거기서 탈취할 물건과 가축은 스스로 취하라 너는 성 뒤에 복병할찌니라

풀이: "여리고와 그 왕에게 했던 그대로 아이와 그 왕에게도 하라. 다만 이번엔 거기서 빼앗은 물건과 가축은 너희가 가져도 된다. 성 뒤편에 군사를 숨겨 매복시켜라."

And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto Jericho and her king: only the spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto yourselves: lay thee an ambush for the city behind it.

이에 여호수아가 일어나서 군사와 함께 아이로 올라가려 하여 용사 삼만명을 뽑아 밤에 보내며

풀이: 그러자 여호수아는 일어나 온 군사를 거느리고 아이성으로 올라가려 했다. 그는 용맹한 군사 3만 명을 골라 밤중에 먼저 내보내며,

So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.

그들에게 명하여 가로되 너희는 성읍 뒤로 가서 성읍을 향하고 매복하되 그 성읍에 너무 멀리 하지 말고 다 스스로 예비하라

풀이: 이렇게 명령했다. "잘 들어라. 너희는 성 뒤로 돌아가 성을 향해 매복하라. 성에서 너무 멀리 떨어지지 말고, 모두 채비를 갖추고 기다려라."

And he commanded them, saying, Behold, ye shall lie in wait against the city, even behind the city: go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready:

나와 나를 좇는 모든 백성은 다 성읍으로 가까이 가리니 그들이 처음과 같이 우리에게로 쳐 올라 올것이라 그리할 때에 우리가 그들 앞에서 도망하면

풀이: "나와 나를 따르는 본대는 성으로 다가갈 것이다. 그러면 저들이 지난번처럼 우리에게 쳐들어 나올 것이고, 그때 우리는 그들 앞에서 도망치는 척하겠다."

And I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them,

그들이 나와서 우리를 따르며 스스로 이르기를 그들이 처음과 같이 우리 앞에서 도망한다 하고 우리의 유인을 받아 그 성읍에서 멀리 떠날것이라 우리가 그 앞에서 도망하거든

풀이: "그들은 우리를 쫓아 나오며 '저들이 지난번처럼 우리 앞에서 도망친다'고 떠들 것이다. 그렇게 우리에게 낚여 성에서 점점 멀어질 것이다. 우리가 그들 앞에서 달아나거든,"

(For they will come out after us) till we have drawn them from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first: therefore we will flee before them.

너희는 매복한 곳에서 일어나서 그 성읍을 점령하라 너희 하나님 여호와께서 너희 손에 붙이시리라

풀이: "너희는 매복한 자리에서 일어나 성을 점령하라. 너희 신이 그 성을 너희 손에 넘겨주실 것이다."

Then ye shall rise up from the ambush, and seize upon the city: for the Lord your God will deliver it into your hand.

너희가 성읍을 취하거든 그것을 불살라 여호와의 말씀대로 행하라 보라 내가 너희에게 명하였느니라 하고

풀이: "성을 손에 넣거든 거기에 불을 질러라. 신이 명령한 그대로 행하는 것이다. 보라, 내가 너희에게 일렀다."

And it shall be, when ye have taken the city, that ye shall set the city on fire: according to the commandment of the Lord shall ye do. See, I have commanded you.

그들을 보내매 그들이 복병할 곳으로 가서 아이 서편 벧엘과 아이 사이에 매복하였고 여호수아는 그 밤에 백성 가운데서 잤더라

풀이: 그렇게 여호수아가 그들을 내보내니, 그들은 매복할 곳으로 가서 벧엘과 아이 사이, 아이 서쪽에 숨었다. 그날 밤 여호수아는 본대 사이에서 잤다.

Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in ambush, and abode between Beth–el and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people.

여호수아가 아침에 일찌기 일어나서 백성을 점고하고 이스라엘 장로들로 더불어 백성 앞서 아이로 올라가매

풀이: 여호수아는 이튿날 아침 일찍 일어나 군사를 점검하고, 이스라엘 장로들과 함께 백성보다 앞장서 아이성으로 올라갔다.

And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.

그를 좇은 군사가 다 올라가서 성읍 앞에 가까이 이르러 아이 북편에 진 치니 그와 아이 사이에는 한 골짜기가 있었더라

풀이: 그를 따르는 군사가 모두 올라가, 성 앞 가까이 이르러 아이성 북쪽에 진을 쳤다. 그들과 아이성 사이에는 골짜기 하나가 가로놓여 있었다.

And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between them and Ai.

그가 오천명 가량을 택하여 성읍 서편 벧엘과 아이 사이에 또 매복시키니

풀이: 여호수아는 따로 5천 명쯤을 뽑아, 성 서쪽 벧엘과 아이 사이에 또 매복시켰다.

And he took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in ambush between Beth–el and Ai, on the west side of the city.

이와 같이 성읍 북편에는 온 군대가 있고 성읍 서편에는 복병이 있었더라 여호수아가 그 밤에 골짜기 가운데로 들어가니

풀이: 이렇게 성 북쪽에는 본대 전체가, 성 서쪽에는 매복조가 자리를 잡았다. 그날 밤 여호수아는 골짜기 한가운데로 내려갔다.

And when they had set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.

아이 왕이 이를 보고 그 성읍 백성과 함께 일찌기 일어나서 급히 나가 아라바 앞에 이르러 정한 때에 이스라엘과 싸우려 하고 성읍 뒤에 복병이 있는 줄은 알지 못하였더라

풀이: 아이 왕이 이 광경을 보고는, 성 사람들과 함께 서둘러 일어나 급히 나섰다. 정해진 시각에 아라바 벌판 앞으로 나와 이스라엘과 맞붙으려 한 것이다. 성 뒤편에 매복이 깔려 있는 줄은 까맣게 몰랐다.

And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he wist not that there were liers in ambush against him behind the city.

여호수아와 온 이스라엘이 그들 앞에서 거짓 패하여 광야 길로 도망하매

풀이: 여호수아와 온 이스라엘은 그들 앞에서 거짓으로 패한 척하며 광야 쪽으로 달아났다.

And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.

그 성 모든 백성이 그들을 따르려고 모여서 여호수아를 따르며 유인함을 입어 성을 멀리 떠나니

풀이: 그러자 아이성에 있던 사람들이 모조리 그들을 쫓으려 불려 나와, 여호수아를 뒤쫓다가 성에서 멀리 떨어지고 말았다.

And all the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.

아이와 벧엘에 이스라엘을 따라가지 아니한 자가 하나도 없으며 성문을 열어 놓고 이스라엘을 따랐더라

풀이: 아이와 벧엘에 이스라엘을 쫓아 나서지 않은 자가 한 사람도 없었다. 그들은 성문을 열어젖힌 채 이스라엘을 뒤쫓았다.

And there was not a man left in Ai or Beth–el, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.

여호와께서 여호수아에게 이르시되 네 손에 잡은 단창을 들어 아이를 가리키라 내가 이 성읍을 네 손에 주리라 여호수아가 그 손에 잡은 단창을 들어 성읍을 가리키니

풀이: 그때 신이 여호수아에게 말했다. "네 손에 든 투창을 들어 아이성을 가리켜라. 내가 그 성을 네 손에 넘겨주겠다." 여호수아가 손에 든 투창을 들어 성을 가리키니,

And the Lord said unto Joshua, Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city.

그 손을 드는 순간에 복병이 그 처소에서 급히 일어나 성읍에 달려 들어가서 점령하고 곧 성읍에 불을 놓았더라

풀이: 그가 손을 드는 그 순간, 매복하고 있던 군사가 자리에서 벌떡 일어나 성으로 달려 들어갔다. 그들은 단숨에 성을 점령하고 곧장 불을 질렀다.

And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted and set the city on fire.

아이 사람이 뒤를 돌아 본즉 그 성읍에 연기가 하늘에 닿은 것이 보이니 이 길로도 저 길로도 도망할 수 없이 되었고 광야로 도망하던 이스라엘 백성은 그 따르던 자에게로 돌이켰더라

풀이: 아이 사람들이 뒤를 돌아보니, 성에서 솟은 연기가 하늘까지 치솟고 있었다. 이쪽으로도 저쪽으로도 달아날 길이 없었다. 게다가 광야로 도망치던 이스라엘 백성이 갑자기 돌아서서 쫓던 자들에게 덤벼들었다.

And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.

여호수아와 온 이스라엘이 그 복병이 성읍을 점령함과 성읍에 연기가 오름을 보고 다시 돌이켜 아이 사람을 죽이고

풀이: 여호수아와 온 이스라엘은 매복조가 성을 점령하고 연기가 오르는 것을 보자, 다시 돌아서서 아이 사람들을 쳤다.

And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai.

복병도 성읍에서 나와 그들을 치매 그들이 이스라엘 중간에 든지라 혹은 이편에서 혹은 저편에서 쳐 죽여서 한 사람도 남거나 도망하지 못하게 하였고

풀이: 매복했던 군사도 성에서 쏟아져 나와 그들을 덮쳤다. 아이 사람들은 앞뒤 이스라엘 군 사이에 갇혔다. 이편에서 저편에서 쳐 죽여, 한 사람도 살아남거나 달아나지 못하게 했다.

And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.

아이 왕을 사로잡아 여호수아 앞으로 끌어 왔더라

풀이: 다만 아이 왕만은 산 채로 사로잡아 여호수아 앞으로 끌고 왔다.

And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.

이스라엘이 자기를 광야로 따르던 아이 모든 거민을 들에서 죽이되 그들을 다 칼날에 엎드러지게 하여 진멸하기를 마치고 온 이스라엘이 아이로 돌아와서 칼날로 죽이매

풀이: 이스라엘은 자기들을 광야로 쫓아 나왔던 아이 주민들을 들판에서 모조리 칼로 쓰러뜨려 끝장냈다. 그러고는 온 이스라엘이 아이성으로 돌아와, 남은 자들마저 칼로 베어 죽였다.

And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.

그 날에 아이 사람의 전부가 죽었으니 남녀가 일만 이천이라

풀이: 그날 쓰러진 아이 사람은 남녀 합쳐 1만 2천 명, 아이성 사람 전부였다.

And so it was, that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.

아이 거민을 진멸하기까지 여호수아가 단창을 잡아 든 손을 거두지 아니하였고

풀이: 여호수아는 아이 주민을 모조리 진멸할 때까지 투창을 잡아 든 손을 거두지 않았다.

For Joshua drew not his hand back, wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.

오직 그 성읍의 가축과 노략한 것은 여호와께서 여호수아에게 명하신대로 이스라엘이 탈취하였더라

풀이: 오직 그 성의 가축과 빼앗은 물건만은 신이 여호수아에게 명령한 대로 이스라엘이 차지했다.

Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the Lord which he commanded Joshua.

이에 여호수아가 아이를 불살라 그것으로 영원한 무더기를 만들었더니 오늘까지 황폐하였으며

풀이: 이렇게 여호수아는 아이성을 불살라, 영원히 일어서지 못할 폐허 더미로 만들었다. 그곳은 오늘날까지 황무지로 남아 있다.

And Joshua burnt Ai, and made it an heap for ever, even a desolation unto this day.

그가 또 아이 왕을 저녁때까지 나무에 달았다가 해질 때에 명하여 그 시체를 나무에서 내려 그 성문 어귀에 던지고 그 위에 돌로 큰 무더기를 쌓았더니 그것이 오늘까지 있더라

풀이: 그는 아이 왕을 저녁때까지 나무에 매달아 두었다가, 해가 지자 명령을 내려 그 주검을 나무에서 내리게 했다. 그것을 성문 어귀에 던지고, 그 위에 큰 돌무더기를 쌓았다. 그 돌무더기는 오늘날까지 그대로 있다.

And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise thereon a great heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day.

때에 여호수아가 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와를 위하여 에발산에 한 단을 쌓았으니

풀이: 그 무렵 여호수아는 이스라엘의 신을 위해 에발산에 제단 하나를 쌓았다.

Then Joshua built an altar unto the Lord God of Israel in mount Ebal,

이는 여호와의 종 모세가 이스라엘 자손에게 명한 것과 모세의 율법책에 기록된대로 철연장으로 다듬지 아니한 새 돌로 만든 단이라 무리가 여호와께 번제와 화목제를 그 위에 드렸으며

풀이: 이는 신의 종 모세가 이스라엘 자손에게 명령한 대로, 또 모세의 율법책에 적힌 대로였다 — 쇠 연장을 대지 않은 다듬지 않은 돌로 쌓은 제단. 사람들은 그 위에 번제와 화목제를 신에게 바쳤다.

As Moses the servant of the Lord commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt offerings unto the Lord, and sacrificed peace offerings.

여호수아가 거기서 모세의 기록한 율법을 이스라엘 자손의 목전에서 그 돌에 기록하매

풀이: 여호수아는 거기서, 모세가 적어 둔 율법을 이스라엘 자손이 지켜보는 앞에서 그 돌판에 새겨 옮겼다.

And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.

온 이스라엘과 그 장로들과 유사들과 재판장들과 본토인 뿐 아니라 이방인까지 여호와의 언약궤를 멘 레위 사람 제사장들 앞에서 궤의 좌우에 서되 절반은 그리심산 앞에, 절반은 에발산 앞에 섰으니 이는 이왕에 여호와의 종 모세가 이스라엘 백성에게 축복하라고 명한대로 함이라

풀이: 온 이스라엘은 — 장로들과 관리들과 재판관들, 그리고 본토 태생뿐 아니라 함께 사는 이방인까지 — 신의 언약궤를 멘 레위 사람 제사장들 앞에서 궤의 좌우로 갈라섰다. 절반은 그리심산을 마주 보고, 절반은 에발산을 마주 보고 섰다. 신의 종 모세가 앞서 명령한 대로, 이스라엘 백성을 축복하기 위함이었다.

And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount Gerizim, and half of them over against mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel.

그 후에 여호수아가 무릇 율법책에 기록된대로 축복과 저주하는 율법의 모든 말씀을 낭독하였으니

풀이: 그런 다음 여호수아는 율법책에 적힌 그대로, 축복과 저주에 관한 율법의 모든 말씀을 소리 내어 읽었다.

And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law.

모세의 명한 것은 여호수아가 이스라엘 온 회중과 여인과 아이와 그들 중에 동거하는 객들 앞에 낭독하지 아니한 말이 하나도 없었더라

풀이: 모세가 명령한 것 가운데, 여호수아가 이스라엘 온 회중과 여인들과 아이들, 그들 틈에 섞여 사는 나그네들 앞에서 빠뜨리고 읽지 않은 말은 단 한 마디도 없었다.

There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.
