에스라 4장

유다와 베냐민의 대적이 사로잡혔던 자의 자손이 이스라엘 하나님 여호와를 위하여 전을 건축한다 함을 듣고

풀이: 유다와 베냐민의 적대 세력은, 포로에서 돌아온 사람들이 이스라엘의 신을 위해 성전을 짓고 있다는 소식을 들었다.

Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the Lord God of Israel;

스룹바벨과 족장들에게 나아와 이르되 우리로 너희와 함께 건축하게 하라 우리도 너희 같이 너희 하나님을 구하노라 앗수르 왕 에살핫돈이 우리를 이리로 오게한 날부터 우리가 하나님께 제사를 드리노라

풀이: 그들은 스룹바벨과 가문 어른들에게 찾아와 말했다. "우리도 함께 짓게 해 달라. 우리도 너희처럼 너희 신을 섬긴다. 앗수르 왕 에살핫돈이 우리를 이 땅으로 데려온 그날부터, 우리도 그분께 제사를 드려 왔다."

Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar–haddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.

스룹바벨과 예수아와 기타 이스라엘 족장들이 이르되 우리 하나님의 전을 건축하는데 너희는 우리와 상관이 없느니라 바사 왕 고레스가 우리에게 명하신대로 우리가 이스라엘 하나님 여호와를 위하여 홀로 건축하리라 하였더니

풀이: 그러나 스룹바벨과 예수아, 그리고 다른 이스라엘 가문 어른들이 대답했다. "우리 신의 성전을 짓는 일에 너희는 우리와 아무 상관이 없다. 페르시아 왕 고레스가 우리에게 명한 대로, 우리끼리 이스라엘의 신을 위해 짓겠다."

But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the Lord God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.

이로부터 그 땅 백성이 유다 백성의 손을 약하게 하여 그 건축을 방해하되

풀이: 그러자 그 땅 사람들은 유다 백성의 손을 늘어지게 만들고, 짓는 일을 사사건건 방해했다.

Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,

바사 왕 고레스의 시대부터 바사 왕 다리오가 즉위할 때까지 의사들에게 뇌물을 주어 그 경영을 저희하였으며

풀이: 그들은 관리들을 매수해 유다 사람들의 계획을 어그러뜨렸다. 페르시아 왕 고레스의 시대부터 페르시아 왕 다리오가 즉위할 때까지 줄곧 그랬다.

And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

또 아하수에로가 즉위할 때에 저희가 글을 올려 유다와 예루살렘 거민을 고소하니라

풀이: 또 아하수에로가 왕위에 오르던 무렵에는, 그들이 글을 올려 유다와 예루살렘에 사는 사람들을 고발했다.

And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

아닥사스다 때에 비슬람과 미드르닷과 다브엘과 그 동료들이 바사 왕 아닥사스다에게 글을 올렸으니 그 글은 아람 문자와 아람 방언으로 써서 진술하였더라

풀이: 아닥사스다 때에는 비슬람과 미드르닷과 다브엘과 그 일당이 페르시아 왕 아닥사스다에게 글을 올렸다. 그 편지는 아람 글자로 쓰였고, 아람 말로 옮겨 적혔다.

And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.

방백 르훔과 서기관 심새가 아닥사스다왕에게 올려 예루살렘 백성을 고소한 그 글에

풀이: 총독 르훔과 서기관 심새도 예루살렘을 고발하는 편지를 아닥사스다 왕에게 이렇게 써 올렸다.

Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:

방백 르훔과 서기관 심새와 그 동료 디나 사람과 아바삿 사람과 다블래 사람과 아바새 사람과 아렉 사람과 바벨론 사람과 수산 사람과 데해 사람과 엘람 사람과

풀이: 총독 르훔과 서기관 심새, 그리고 그 동료들 — 곧 디나 사람, 아바삿 사람, 다블래 사람, 아바새 사람, 아렉 사람, 바벨론 사람, 수산 사람, 데해 사람, 엘람 사람과,

Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,

기타 백성 곧 존귀한 오스납발이 사마리아 성과 강 서편 다른 땅에 옮겨 둔 자들과 함께 고한다 하였더라

풀이: 그 밖에 위대하고 존귀한 오스납발이 옮겨다가 사마리아 성과 강 서편 여러 땅에 정착시킨 다른 민족들이 함께 올린다.

And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side the river, and at such a time.

아닥사스다왕에게 올린 그 글의 초본은 이러하니 강 서편에 있는 신복들은

풀이: 그들이 왕에게 보낸 편지의 사본은 이러하다. 강 서편에 사는 왕의 종들이 아룁니다.

This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.

왕에게 고하나이다 왕에게서 올라온 유다 사람들이 우리의 곳 예루살렘에 이르러 이 패역하고 악한 성읍을 건축하는데 이미 그 지대를 수축하고 성곽을 건축하오니

풀이: 왕께 아룁니다. 왕이 계신 곳에서 우리에게로 올라온 유다 사람들이 예루살렘에 이르러, 저 반역하고 악한 성읍을 다시 짓고 있습니다. 이미 성벽을 세우고 기초를 잇고 있습니다.

Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.

이제 왕은 아시옵소서 만일 이 성읍을 건축하며 그 성곽을 마치면 저 무리가 다시는 조공과 잡세와 부세를 바치지 아니하리니 필경 왕들에게 손해가 되리이다

풀이: 이제 왕께서 아셔야 합니다. 만약 이 성읍이 다 지어지고 성벽이 세워지면, 저들은 다시는 조공도 세금도 관세도 바치지 않을 것이고, 결국 왕실 수입에 손해가 될 것입니다.

Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt endamage the revenue of the kings.

우리가 이제 궁의 소금을 먹는고로 왕의 수치 당함을 참아 보지못하여 보내어 왕에게 고하오니

풀이: 우리는 왕궁의 소금을 먹는 몸이라, 왕께서 욕보시는 것을 차마 두고 볼 수 없어 이렇게 사람을 보내 왕께 알립니다.

Now because we have maintenance from the king’s palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king’s dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king;

왕은 열조의 사기를 살피시면 그 사기에서 이 성읍은 패역한 성읍이라 예로부터 그 중에서 항상 반역하는 일을 행하여 열왕과 각 도에 손해가 된 것을 보시고 아실찌라 이 성읍이 훼파됨도 이 까닭이니이다

풀이: 왕께서 선왕들의 기록을 뒤져 보시면, 그 문서에서 이 성읍이 반역의 성읍이며 예로부터 왕들과 여러 지방에 손해를 끼쳐 왔음을 아시게 될 것입니다. 그 안에서 늘 모반을 꾀했으니, 이 성읍이 무너진 것도 바로 그 때문입니다.

That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.

이제 감히 왕에게 고하오니 이 성읍이 중건되어 성곽을 필역하면 이로 말미암아 왕의 강 서편 영지가 없어지리이다 하였더라

풀이: 이제 왕께 감히 아룁니다. 이 성읍이 다시 지어지고 성벽이 완성되면, 그로 인해 왕께서는 강 서편에 차지할 몫을 잃게 되실 것입니다.

We certify the king that, if this city be builded again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.

왕이 방백 르훔과 서기관 심새와 사마리아에 거한 저희 동료와 강 서편 다른 땅 백성에게 조서를 내리니 일렀으되 너희는 평안할지어다

풀이: 왕은 총독 르훔과 서기관 심새, 사마리아에 사는 그 동료들, 그리고 강 서편의 나머지 사람들에게 답서를 내렸다. "평안하기를 빈다.

Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.

너희의 올린 글을 내 앞에서 낭독시키고

풀이: 너희가 우리에게 올린 편지는 내 앞에서 또박또박 낭독되었다.

The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.

명하여 살펴보니 과연 이 성읍이 예로부터 열왕을 거역하며 그 중에서 항상 패역하고 모반하는 일을 행하였으며

풀이: 내가 명하여 조사하게 했더니, 과연 이 성읍이 예로부터 왕들에게 맞서 일어났고 그 안에서 늘 반란과 모반이 일어났음이 드러났다.

And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.

옛적에는 예루살렘을 주재하는 큰 군왕이 있어서 강 서편 모든 땅도 주재하매 조공과 잡세와 부세를 저에게 다 바쳤도다

풀이: 옛적에는 예루살렘을 다스리는 강력한 왕들이 있어 강 서편 온 땅을 지배했고, 조공과 세금과 관세가 모두 그들에게 바쳐졌다.

There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.

이제 너희는 명을 전하여 그 사람들로 역사를 그치게 하여 그 성을 건축지 못하게 하고 내가 다시 조서 내리기를 기다리라

풀이: 그러니 이제 명령을 내려 그 사람들이 일을 멈추게 하고, 내가 다시 명할 때까지 이 성읍을 짓지 못하게 하라.

Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me.

너희는 삼가서 이 일에 게으르지 말라 어찌하여 화를 더하여 왕들에게 손해가 되게 하랴 하였더라

풀이: 이 일에 소홀하지 않도록 조심하라. 어찌하여 화를 키워 왕실에 손해가 되게 하겠는가."

Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?

아닥사스다왕의 조서 초본이 르훔과 서기관 심새와 그 동료 앞에서 낭독되매 저희가 예루살렘으로 급히 가서 유다 사람들을 보고 권력으로 억제하여 그 역사를 그치게 하니

풀이: 아닥사스다 왕의 답서 사본이 르훔과 서기관 심새와 그 동료들 앞에서 낭독되자, 그들은 서둘러 예루살렘의 유다 사람들에게 달려가, 힘과 권력으로 밀어붙여 그 공사를 멈추게 했다.

Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.

이에 예루살렘에서 하나님의 전 역사가 그쳐서 바사 왕 다리오 제 이년까지 이르니라

풀이: 이렇게 예루살렘에서 신의 성전을 짓는 일이 중단되어, 페르시아 왕 다리오 즉위 2년에 이르기까지 멈춰 있었다.

Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
