온 땅의 구음이 하나이요 언어가 하나이었더라

풀이: 온 땅이 한 가지 말을 쓰고, 같은 낱말로 이야기를 나누던 때가 있었다.

And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.

이에 그들이 동방으로 옮기다가 시날 평지를 만나 거기 거하고

풀이: 사람들은 동쪽에서 옮겨 오다가 시날 땅의 너른 들판을 만나, 거기에 자리를 잡고 살았다.

And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.

서로 말하되 자, 벽돌을 만들어 견고히 굽자 하고 이에 벽돌로 돌을 대신하며 역청으로 진흙을 대신하고

풀이: 그들은 서로 말했다. "자, 벽돌을 빚어 단단히 구워 내자." 그래서 돌 대신 벽돌을, 진흙 대신 역청을 썼다.

And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.

또 말하되 자, 성과 대를 쌓아 대 꼭대기를 하늘에 닿게하여 우리 이름을 내고 온 지면에 흩어짐을 면하자 하였더니

풀이: 또 말했다. "자, 우리 도시를 세우고 탑을 쌓자. 그 꼭대기가 하늘에 닿게 해서 우리 이름을 떨치자. 그래야 온 땅에 뿔뿔이 흩어지지 않을 것 아니냐."

And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

여호와께서 인생들의 쌓는 성과 대를 보시려고 강림하셨더라

풀이: 신이 사람들이 쌓고 있는 그 도시와 탑을 보려고 내려왔다.

And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.

여호와께서 가라사대 이 무리가 한 족속이요 언어도 하나이므로 이같이 시작하였으니 이후로는 그 경영하는 일을 금지할 수 없으리로다

풀이: 신이 말했다. "보아라, 이들은 한 백성이고 쓰는 말도 하나다. 그래서 이런 일을 시작한 것이다. 이제 이들이 하려고 마음먹은 일은 무엇 하나 막을 수 없게 되겠구나."

And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.

자, 우리가 내려가서 거기서 그들의 언어를 혼잡케 하여 그들로 서로 알아듣지 못하게 하자 하시고

풀이: "자, 우리가 내려가서 저들의 말을 뒤섞어, 서로 무슨 말을 하는지 알아듣지 못하게 하자."

Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.

여호와께서 거기서 그들을 온 지면에 흩으신고로 그들이 성 쌓기를 그쳤더라

풀이: 그리하여 신은 거기서 그들을 온 땅으로 흩어 버렸고, 그들은 도시 쌓기를 그만두었다.

So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.

그러므로 그 이름을 바벨이라 하니 이는 여호와께서 거기서 온 땅의 언어를 혼잡케 하셨음이라 여호와께서 거기서 그들을 온 지면에 흩으셨더라

풀이: 그래서 그곳의 이름을 바벨이라 했다. 신이 거기서 온 땅의 말을 뒤섞어 버렸기 때문이다. 신은 거기서 그들을 온 땅으로 흩어 버렸다.

Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

셈의 후예는 이러하니라 셈은 일백세 곧 홍수 후 이년에 아르박삿을 낳았고

풀이: 셈의 계보는 이러하다. 셈은 100살에, 곧 홍수가 끝나고 2년가 지났을 때 아르박삿을 낳았다.

These are the generations of Shem: Shem was an hundred years old, and begat Arphaxad two years after the flood:

아르박삿을 낳은 후에 오백년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며

풀이: 아르박삿을 낳은 뒤로 셈은 500년을 더 살며 아들딸을 낳았다.

And Shem lived after he begat Arphaxad five hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.

아르박삿은 삼십 오세에 셀라를 낳았고

풀이: 아르박삿은 35살에 셀라를 낳았다.

And Arphaxad lived five and thirty years, and begat Salah:

셀라를 낳은 후에 사백 삼년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며

풀이: 셀라를 낳은 뒤로 아르박삿은 403년을 더 살며 아들딸을 낳았다.

And Arphaxad lived after he begat Salah four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.

셀라는 삼십세에 에벨을 낳았고

풀이: 셀라는 30살에 에벨을 낳았다.

And Salah lived thirty years, and begat Eber:

에벨을 낳은 후에 사백 삼년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며

풀이: 에벨을 낳은 뒤로 셀라는 403년을 더 살며 아들딸을 낳았다.

And Salah lived after he begat Eber four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.

에벨은 삼십 사세에 벨렉을 낳았고

풀이: 에벨은 34살에 벨렉을 낳았다.

And Eber lived four and thirty years, and begat Peleg:

벨렉을 낳은 후에 사백 삼십년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며

풀이: 벨렉을 낳은 뒤로 에벨은 430년을 더 살며 아들딸을 낳았다.

And Eber lived after he begat Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters.

벨렉은 삼십세에 르우를 낳았고

풀이: 벨렉은 30살에 르우를 낳았다.

And Peleg lived thirty years, and begat Reu:

르우를 낳은 후에 이백 구년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며

풀이: 르우를 낳은 뒤로 벨렉은 209년을 더 살며 아들딸을 낳았다.

And Peleg lived after he begat Reu two hundred and nine years, and begat sons and daughters.

르우는 삼십 이세에 스룩을 낳았고

풀이: 르우는 32살에 스룩을 낳았다.

And Reu lived two and thirty years, and begat Serug:

스룩을 낳은 후에 이백 칠년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며

풀이: 스룩을 낳은 뒤로 르우는 207년을 더 살며 아들딸을 낳았다.

And Reu lived after he begat Serug two hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters.

스룩은 삼십세에 나홀을 낳았고

풀이: 스룩은 30살에 나홀을 낳았다.

And Serug lived thirty years, and begat Nahor:

나홀을 낳은 후에 이백년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며

풀이: 나홀을 낳은 뒤로 스룩은 200년을 더 살며 아들딸을 낳았다.

And Serug lived after he begat Nahor two hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.

나홀은 이십 구세에 데라를 낳았고

풀이: 나홀은 29살에 데라를 낳았다.

And Nahor lived nine and twenty years, and begat Terah:

데라를 낳은 후에 일백 십구년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며

풀이: 데라를 낳은 뒤로 나홀은 119년을 더 살며 아들딸을 낳았다.

And Nahor lived after he begat Terah an hundred and nineteen years, and begat sons and daughters.

데라는 칠십세에 아브람과 나홀과 하란을 낳았더라

풀이: 데라는 70살에 아브람과 나홀과 하란을 낳았다.

And Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

데라의 후예는 이러하니라 데라는 아브람과 나홀과 하란을 낳았고 하란은 롯을 낳았으며

풀이: 데라의 계보는 이러하다. 데라는 아브람과 나홀과 하란을 낳았고, 하란은 롯을 낳았다.

Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot.

하란은 그 아비 데라보다 먼저 본토 갈대아 우르에서 죽었더라

풀이: 하란은 자기가 태어난 땅, 갈대아 우르에서 아버지 데라보다 먼저 죽었다.

And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees.

아브람과 나홀이 장가 들었으니 아브람의 아내 이름은 사래며 나홀의 아내 이름은 밀가니 하란의 딸이요 하란은 밀가의 아비며 또 이스가의 아비더라

풀이: 아브람과 나홀은 아내를 맞았다. 아브람의 아내는 이름이 사래였고, 나홀의 아내는 밀가였는데, 밀가와 이스가의 아버지인 하란의 딸이었다.

And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram’s wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor’s wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.

사래는 잉태하지 못하므로 자식이 없었더라

풀이: 그런데 사래는 아이를 갖지 못해, 자식이 없었다.

But Sarai was barren; she had no child.

데라가 그 아들 아브람과 하란의 아들 그 손자 롯과 그 자부 아브람의 아내 사래를 데리고 갈대아 우르에서 떠나 가나안 땅으로 가고자 하더니 하란에 이르러 거기 거하였으며

풀이: 데라는 아들 아브람과, 하란의 아들이자 자기 손자인 롯과, 며느리 곧 아브람의 아내 사래를 데리고 가나안 땅으로 가려고 갈대아 우르를 떠났다. 그러나 하란에 이르러 거기에 자리를 잡고 머물렀다.

And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.

데라는 이백 오세를 향수하고 하란에서 죽었더라

풀이: 데라는 205년을 살고 하란에서 죽었다.

And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran.
