출애굽기 17장

이스라엘 자손의 온 회중이 여호와의 명령대로 신 광야에서 떠나 그 노정대로 행하여 르비딤에 장막을 쳤으나 백성이 마실 물이 없는지라

풀이: 이스라엘 자손의 온 무리가 신의 명령을 따라 신 광야를 떠나, 정해진 여정대로 옮겨 다니다가 르비딤에 진을 쳤다. 그런데 그곳에는 백성이 마실 물이 없었다.

And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the Lord, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.

백성이 모세와 다투어 가로되 우리에게 물을 주어 마시게 하라 모세가 그들에게 이르되 너희가 어찌하여 나와 다투느냐 너희가 어찌하여 여호와를 시험하느냐

풀이: 백성이 모세에게 대들며 말했다. "우리에게 마실 물을 내놔라." 모세가 그들에게 말했다. "어째서 나에게 대드느냐? 어째서 신을 시험하느냐?"

Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the Lord?

거기서 백성이 물에 갈하매 그들이 모세를 대하여 원망하여 가로되 당신이 어찌하여 우리를 애굽에서 인도하여 내어서 우리와 우리 자녀와 우리 생축으로 목말라 죽게 하느냐

풀이: 그러나 백성은 거기서 목이 말랐다. 그들은 모세를 향해 불평을 쏟아냈다. "당신이 도대체 왜 우리를 이집트에서 끌어내, 우리도 우리 자식도 우리 가축도 다 목말라 죽게 만드는 거요?"

And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?

모세가 여호와께 부르짖어 가로되 내가 이 백성에게 어떻게 하리이까 그들이 얼마 아니면 내게 돌질 하겠나이다

풀이: 모세가 신에게 부르짖었다. "이 백성을 제가 어떻게 해야 합니까? 조금만 더 가면 저를 돌로 쳐 죽일 기세입니다."

And Moses cried unto the Lord, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.

여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 백성 앞을 지나가서 이스라엘 장로들을 데리고 하수를 치던 네 지팡이를 손에 잡고 가라

풀이: 신이 모세에게 말했다. "백성보다 앞서 나아가거라. 이스라엘의 장로 몇을 데리고, 네가 강을 쳤던 그 지팡이를 손에 쥐고 가거라."

And the Lord said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.

내가 거기서 호렙산 반석 위에 너를 대하여 서리니 너는 반석을 치라 그것에서 물이 나리니 백성이 마시리라 모세가 이스라엘 장로들의 목전에서 그대로 행하니라

풀이: "보아라, 내가 거기 호렙의 바위 위에서 네 앞에 서 있겠다. 너는 그 바위를 쳐라. 그러면 거기서 물이 흘러나와 백성이 마시게 될 것이다." 모세는 이스라엘 장로들이 지켜보는 앞에서 그대로 했다.

Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

그가 그곳 이름을 맛사라 또는 므리바라 불렀으니 이는 이스라엘 자손이 다투었음이요 또는 그들이 여호와를 시험하여 이르기를 여호와께서 우리 중에 계신가 아닌가 하였음이더라

풀이: 모세는 그곳의 이름을 맛사라 부르고 또 므리바라고도 불렀다. 이스라엘 자손이 거기서 다투었고, 또 "신이 우리 가운데 계신가, 아닌가?" 하며 신을 시험했기 때문이다.

And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord, saying, Is the Lord among us, or not?

때에 아말렉이 이르러 이스라엘과 르비딤에서 싸우니라

풀이: 그때 아말렉이 들이닥쳐 르비딤에서 이스라엘과 싸웠다.

Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.

모세가 여호수아에게 이르되 우리를 위하여 사람들을 택하여 나가서 아말렉과 싸우라 내일 내가 하나님의 지팡이를 손에 잡고 산꼭대기에 서리라

풀이: 모세가 여호수아에게 말했다. "우리를 위해 사람들을 골라 나가서 아말렉과 싸워라. 내일 나는 신의 지팡이를 손에 쥐고 언덕 꼭대기에 서 있겠다."

And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.

여호수아가 모세의 말대로 행하여 아말렉과 싸우고 모세와 아론과 훌은 산꼭대기에 올라가서

풀이: 여호수아는 모세가 말한 대로 하여 아말렉과 싸웠고, 모세와 아론과 훌은 언덕 꼭대기로 올라갔다.

So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

모세가 손을 들면 이스라엘이 이기고 손을 내리면 아말렉이 이기더니

풀이: 모세가 손을 들고 있으면 이스라엘이 우세했고, 손을 내리면 아말렉이 우세했다.

And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

모세의 팔이 피곤하매 그들이 돌을 가져다가 모세의 아래에 놓아 그로 그 위에 앉게 하고 아론과 훌이 하나는 이편에서, 하나는 저편에서 모세의 손을 붙들어 올렸더니 그 손이 해가 지도록 내려오지 아니한지라

풀이: 모세의 두 팔이 무거워지자, 그들은 돌을 가져다 모세 밑에 받쳐 그 위에 앉게 했다. 그리고 아론과 훌이 한 사람은 이쪽에서, 한 사람은 저쪽에서 모세의 두 손을 떠받쳤다. 그렇게 그의 손은 해가 질 때까지 흔들림 없이 들려 있었다.

But Moses’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

여호수아가 칼날로 아말렉과 그 백성을 쳐서 파하니라

풀이: 여호수아는 칼날로 아말렉과 그 백성을 무찔렀다.

And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 이것을 책에 기록하여 기념하게 하고 여호수아의 귀에 외워 들리라 내가 아말렉을 도말하여 천하에서 기억함이 없게 하리라

풀이: 신이 모세에게 말했다. "이 일을 기념으로 책에 적고, 여호수아의 귀에 새겨 들려주어라. 내가 아말렉을 지워, 하늘 아래에서 그 기억조차 없게 하겠다."

And the Lord said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

모세가 단을 쌓고 그 이름을 여호와 닛시라 하고

풀이: 모세는 제단을 쌓고 그 이름을 '여호와 닛시'라 불렀다.

And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it JEHOVAH–nissi:

가로되 여호와께서 맹세하시기를 여호와가 아말렉으로 더불어 대대로 싸우리라 하셨다 하였더라

풀이: 그리고 그는 말했다. "손을 들어 신의 깃발을 향해 맹세하니, 신이 아말렉과 대대로 싸우실 것이다."

For he said, Because the Lord hath sworn that the Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.
